2. Polynomials Zeros of a polynomial, and the relationship between the zeros and coefficients of quadratic polynomials.
3. Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables Solving two linear equations together — graphically, by substitution, and by elimination.
4. Quadratic Equations Solving quadratics by factorisation and the quadratic formula, and using the discriminant to find the nature of roots.
5. Arithmetic Progressions The nth term and the sum of the first n terms of an AP, applied to everyday problems.

6. Coordinate Geometry The distance formula and the section formula for points on the coordinate plane.
📙 Geometry — 15 marks
7. Triangles Similar triangles, the Basic Proportionality Theorem, and the criteria for triangle similarity.

9. Introduction to Trigonometry Trigonometric ratios, standard-angle values, and simple identities based on sin²A + cos²A = 1.
10. Some Applications of Trigonometry Heights and distances — using angles of elevation and depression to solve real-world problems.
📊 Mensuration — 10 marks
11. Areas Related to Circles Areas of sectors and segments of a circle, and related perimeter problems.
12. Surface Areas and Volumes Surface areas and volumes of combinations of solids — cubes, cuboids, spheres, hemispheres, cylinders and cones.
🎲 Statistics & Probability — 11 marks
13. Statistics Mean, median and mode of grouped data.
14. Probability The classical definition of probability and simple problems on the likelihood of events.
How many chapters are in Class 10 Maths?
There are fourteen chapters in the current CBSE Class 10 Maths syllabus. This is worth stating clearly because a lot of older material online still lists fifteen — including a chapter called Constructions. Constructions was part of an earlier edition and is no longer in the current syllabus, so if you’re studying from an old list, that’s the one to drop. Fourteen chapters is the correct, current number.
A sensible order to study them
The textbook order works perfectly well — but if you’re deciding where to put your energy, here’s an approach many students find effective:
Start by securing the self-contained, scoring chapters. Real Numbers and Coordinate Geometry are fairly self-contained and give you reliable marks early — a confidence-building place to begin.
Build the Algebra chapters together. Polynomials, Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations and Arithmetic Progressions connect to each other and carry the most marks, so it pays to work through them as a block while the ideas are fresh.
Give the practice-heavy chapters more time. Many students find Trigonometry and Geometry (Triangles, Circles) reward extra practice — they’re very learnable, but the theorems and identities take repetition to become automatic. Plan a little more time for them rather than being surprised.
Keep Statistics and Probability as dependable finishers. They’re self-contained and scoring, making them reliable marks to lock in.
