Why CBSE asks case-based questions
Understanding why these exist takes away most of the fear. CBSE introduced case-based questions to test whether you can apply maths, not just perform it in the abstract. A step-by-step method to solve any case study
This is the heart of it. Use the same five steps every single time, and case studies become routine:
1. Read the whole scenario first — before looking at the questions. This is the step most students skip, and it’s the most important. Read the entire situation calmly and get a clear picture of what’s happening before you even glance at the sub-questions. Rushing straight to the questions is the number-one cause of case-study mistakes.
2. Spot the maths concept. Ask yourself: which chapter is this really about? A scenario about a ladder against a wall is trigonometry. A savings-that-grow-each-month story is arithmetic progressions. Once you name the concept, you know which tools to reach for.
3. Extract the given data. Pull out the numbers and facts the scenario gives you, and note what each represents. Writing them down clearly turns a wordy paragraph into a normal maths problem.
4. Solve the sub-questions in order. They’re usually designed to build on each other — the first is often simpler and sets up the later ones. Answer them in sequence, showing your working (these are subjective questions, so method marks count).
5. Check your answer against the situation. A quick sanity check: does your answer make sense in the real-world context? If a question asks for the height of a building and you get 2 metres, something’s gone wrong. This catch-it-early habit saves marks.

“A gardener is planting a triangular flower bed. She stands 15 metres from the base of a tall tree and measures the angle to the top of the tree as 30°. She wants to work out the height of the tree to plan the shade.”
Watch the method do the work:
- Read it all: the situation is about a tree, a distance, and an angle — we want a height.
- Spot the concept: an angle, a horizontal distance, and a height — this is trigonometry (heights and distances).
- Extract the data: distance from tree = 15 m, angle of elevation = 30°, height = unknown.
- Solve: height and the known distance relate through tan(30°), so height = 15 × tan(30°) — a familiar calculation from your trigonometry chapter.
- Check: the answer comes out to a sensible tree height, so it makes sense in context.

Common mistakes on case-study questions
Avoid these and you’re most of the way there:
- Jumping to the sub-questions without reading the full scenario — you miss context and given data.

- Panicking at the length — more text doesn’t mean harder maths. Stay calm; the maths is from your syllabus.
